How does Matu AI differ from other AI chatbots or ChatGPT?
Under the hood, Matu runs on Anthropic's Claude models, the same family of AI behind many well-known assistants. We'll be honest: if you want long theological essays, ChatGPT writes more detailed ones. What makes Matu different is everything built around the model.
Matu's answers are grounded in Scripture and cite the Bible verses, every reference is tappable and opens that passage in your Bible reader. Your Bible, notes, journal, and chat live in one, instead of scattered across multiple apps. We also have 120+ conversation starters for people ranging from "new to faith" to deeper topics.
Most AI chatbots are tuned to keep you engaged; we instruct Matu the opposite way. The best outcome is a shorter chat that motivates you to put the phone down and spend more time with God.
Because chat conversations can get personal, every message is analyzed before reply. If a conversation turns toward depression or crisis, Matu is thoroughly stress-tested to handle them delicately.
Keep in mind: Matu is an AI, not a person. It never claims feelings, and it does not replace real human connection, your pastor, a trusted friend, your community, or real prayer with God. When you need help, turn to a real person. No set of rules controls an AI perfectly, so a healthy dose of caution is wise with any chatbot, ours included.
Which Bible translations do you support?
In English, Matu currently offers three translations. The default is the Berean Standard Bible (BSB), a modern, high-quality translation purpose-built to be free forever, with a good balance between accuracy and readability. You can also switch to the World English Bible (WEB), a modern, readable translation designed for digital use, or the King James Version (KJV), the classic 1611 translation. All three are public domain.
Matu is also available in Spanish and Portuguese, each currently with one translation of the full Bible, with more languages and translations planned.
Is Matu app free?
Yes, Matu is free to use. We do not ask your credit card information or subscription as most Christian apps do in order to start using it. We do have a Premium option but it only unlocks extra features on top of free, such as Phone lock and unlimited AI chat.
Is my data private? Who can read my conversations?
All your conversations are stored in a Supabase database. They are encrypted, but technically readable by the developer of this app (see our privacy policy for details). In practice, we never read your personal conversations. Other users can never see your data - isolation is enforced at the database level. No chat content appears in logs or anywhere else outside the database. You have full control of your data: you can delete your conversations inside the app whenever you want, and this also removes all chat content from our database.
Are my conversations used to train AI?
Matu uses Anthropic's models on the backend. Anthropic does not use API data to train its models - see their commercial terms for more information. We don't train anything on your conversations either.
Can I delete my data?
Yes, completely. Go to Profile and delete your account - that removes everything from our servers. If you only want to wipe your chat history, you can do that separately inside the app.
